Canadian visits to Spain rose about 6% to 457,000 as Alicante-Elche Airport handled a record 19.9 million passengers
ALICANTE, Spain — November 4, 2026 — Park-King Alicante, a vehicle management operator serving Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, has expanded its long-term vehicle storage and scheduled handover services for travelers staying in Spain for several weeks at a time. The company said the change follows two trends in public data: more Canadians are traveling to Spain, and record passenger volumes are passing through Alicante-Elche.
Canadians made 457,000 visits to Spain in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, according to the Annual Consular Data Report published by Global Affairs Canada. That is up from 430,000 the year before, an increase of about 6%, and it places Spain 10th among international destinations for Canadian travelers. The report draws on Statistics Canada’s National Travel Survey.
Traffic at Alicante-Elche has grown faster still. Aena’s 2025 traffic statistics show that the airport handled 19,950,394 passengers in 2025, up 8.5% from 2024. Among Spain’s major airports, only Valencia grew faster. From January to August 2026, Alicante-Elche handled 14,739,523 passengers, including a monthly record of 2,337,378 in August, 11.4% more than in August 2025.
Longer Stays, Different Parking Needs
The length of a stay matters as much as the number of travelers. Under Schengen Area rules, Canadian citizens can stay in Spain without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as set out in the Government of Canada’s travel advice for Spain. Travelers who use a large part of that allowance, including seasonal residents on the Costa Blanca, often leave a vehicle near the airport for the whole stay.
“What has changed is how long cars stay, not only how many arrive,” said Carlos Mendoza, Operational Analyst at Park-King Alicante. “A car that used to be parked for one week is now often parked for six or eight. That changes how much space is needed in peak months and how handovers are scheduled around return flights.”
Long stays affect the whole airport area, not one company. Aena runs the official car parks at the terminal. Private operators such as Park-King Alicante provide off-site storage and meet-and-greet handover. When more vehicles stay for longer, spaces turn over more slowly, and drop-off and pick-up become more concentrated around peak arrival and departure days.
What the Expanded Service Covers
According to the company, the expanded long-stay service includes:
-
Storage terms set for multi-week and multi-month stays, in addition to short holiday bookings
-
A recorded vehicle inspection at drop-off and again at return
-
Handover times scheduled around the traveler’s confirmed return flight
-
Transfers between the storage site and the terminal
The company said booking in advance with a known return date helps it plan capacity for the months when long-stay and holiday traffic overlap.
“Most long-stay travelers know their return date weeks ahead,” Mendoza said. “When we have that date early, we can plan space and staff for it, instead of reacting on the day.”
Guidance for Travelers Planning Extended Stays
Park-King Alicante suggests that Canadian and other non-EU travelers planning long stays confirm how many days remain in their Schengen allowance before departure, since earlier trips within the same 180-day period count toward the 90-day limit. Travelers leaving a vehicle for several weeks should also check that their insurance covers storage, keep copies of their vehicle documents, and read the operator’s inspection and handover terms before booking any long-term parking.
